Come with me feel the beat of my song - Marina Velázquez Suárez
Come with Me and Feel the Beat of My Song is a collection of poems and original watercolors by Puerto Rican artist Marina Velázquez-Suárez. The poems and illustrations stemmed from her feelings after Hurricane Maria struck the Island in 2017. As Velázquez-Suárez states: I wrote these poems to express my love for the Island. When Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, I felt my heart shatter as if I had been struck as well. In body and soul, I was Puerto Rico. The intensity of her poems and illustrations transport you. In one poem you hear the chorus of coquíes, in another you walk through the Spanish Citadel in Old San Juan. In other poems you may hike the trails of the National Rain Forest El Yunque or hear the waves as you feel Puerto Rico s white sands beneath your feet. Like many Puerto Ricans, Marina thinks in three languages, Spanish, English and Spanglish. The poems are written in English to appeal to a broad audience, Puerto Ricans living on the Island, the Puerto Rican diaspora around the world and the many tourists who have fallen in love with la del encanto. The words and watercolors of Marina Velázquez-Suárez are unbound by national territory and a celebration of Puerto Rico and who she is. A creation born out of love to be cherished for generations to come
