Last week, a woman appeared before Sussex magistrates charged with murdering her two young children. While we don't yet know the truth of that allegation, the coincidence between that event and this novella, which deals with a double infanticide, is too strong to ignore; when such things happen, we crave explanations, and Beside the Seaoffers us, if not explanations, then at least some degree of insight.
